In several regions of the world irrigation of sugar beet fields is necessary to improve plant emergence and the efficacy of plant protection products. A good understanding of how sugar beet plants use water throughout their growth cycles can help to protect limited water ressources and avoid soil degradation as well as ground water pollution.

The AIMCRA/IIRB Seminar 'Advances in sugar beet irrigation', held the 5th June 2013 at the Centro Cultural San Agustin and attended by 200 participants, outlined the status quo of irrigation management in sugar beet production by giving insight into water requirement monitoring and newest research findings. A field day, organised by the Spanish sugar beet research institute AIMCRA on 4th June showed the state of the art in irrigation techniques.
